Slalom X
Men’s
Pierre Mortefon made an uncharacteristic mistake in the opening race of the day (Elimination 2) as the Frenchman dropped his last gybe in the Winners’ Final to drop from second to eighth as he dropped from first to third from the overnight rankings. However, the reigning world champion in both Slalom X and Foil Slalom, soon steadied the ship as he rattled off his second bullet in three races before signing off the day with a solid second place in Elimination 4 to open up 5.6 point advantage at the top of the rankings, which puts Mortefon in complete control of the world title race.
Like Mortefon, Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z Fins) had to recover from a less than ideal start to the day - 12th in Elimination 2 - after wiping out on the start line in the semifinal after clipping his clew on Lohan Jules’ (AV Boards / S2Maui) mast, which caused him to go over the handlebars and miss out on the Winners’ Final. The Bonairean then bounced back brilliantly to record his best results of the event so far with a second and a third, which sees the 29-year-old deservedly jump from fourth to second in the current event rankings.
Jordy Vonk had a bit of a mixed bag of results on the second day of racing, but still rises into the top three from sixth at the start of play. The flying Dutchman claimed his first bullet of the event in Elimination 2 before securing fourth place in Elimination 3, which saw him move to within just 1.3 points of the lead. However, Vonk then just missed out on a place in the Winners’ Final after getting parked after the penultimate gybe in Elimination 4, which ultimately saw him drop out of the top five qualifying positions.
Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails / Z Fins) started the event with a solid second place, but by his own high standards didn’t enjoy his best day on the water with two fifth places and a seventh from today’s three eliminations. The Italian only finished outside the top four once in 12 eliminations in Fuerte and while there is still plenty of time for more racing left here, he’d have to go on an incredible run to deny Mortefon the world title - the Italian was Mortefon’s closest challenger coming into the event, but already faces an 8.6 point deficit. However, Iachino is still firmly in contention for another event podium.
After starting the day with another third place, and with how results worked out elsewhere, Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde) temporarily moved into the event lead. However, on this occasion it was short lived with the Pole going down on the entry to the opening gybe in the Winners’ Final of Elimination 3, which cost him dearly as he recorded a 10th place before completing the day with a sixth. Like Iachino, the Pole loses a couple of places from the overnight rankings - third to fifth - equal on 12 points with Iachino.
In a cruel twist of fate it looked like Nico Prien may be denied a maiden fin bullet on the World Tour as Elimination 2 was cancelled when he was leading due to the last buoy drifting. However, after recording a sixth place in the rerun, followed by the same result in Elimination 3, Prien struck the front of the pack again as he bore down on Mortefon on the second gybe to take the lead and this time no ill luck could prevent Prien, who has previously won a foil elimination (Gran Canaria 2023), from claiming his first fin bullet, which sees the German climb one place into sixth.
Bruno Martini (I-99 / S2Maui / Z Fins) will be brutally disappointed with how the last elimination of the day played out as up until that point the Italian was enjoying a fine day after opening with a second and a third place. However, when leading the opening semifinal of Elimination 4, Martini went down in the first gybe, which cost him a place in the Winners’ Final for the first time at this event. Martini currently discards that result, but will rue missing the chance to discard a 10th from the opening elimination as with a similar result he would’ve been firmly in contention for the podium. Martini still has a shot at the podium, but realistically can’t afford any more hiccups.
The top ten is currently completed by Taty Frans (Point-7 / Z Fins) - 8th - Ingmar Daldorf (Tabou / GA Sails) - 9th - while Lohan Jules climbs into the top ten - 13th to 10th - but things could’ve been even better for the 23-year-old had he not sailed to the wrong mark when leading the first semifinal of Elimination 4.
On paper the forecast for Tuesday looks marginally lighter than today - 17-19 knots during the afternoon compared to 18-21 knots - so there is a decent chance of more competition tomorrow. The Wave fleets will be given another call at 11am (GMT+1) with a first possible start at 11:30am, while the Slalom X fleet will have their skippers’ meeting at 12pm again with a first possible start at 13:00.
